America’s largest free arts festival is going off this weekend in Baltimore right in The Fitzgerald’s backyard! But what is it? What is Artscape?
Artscape features over 150 artists, fashion designers and craftspeople, as well as visual art exhibits, outdoor sculptures, art cars, photography and the presentation of the coveted Janet & Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize. On top of the great art events, there are also incredible live concerts on three outdoor stages, a full schedule of performing arts including dance, opera, theater, fashion, film, experimental music and performances by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Artscape is a child-friendly event and there are many fun family activities scheduled, such as hands-on projects, demonstrations, competitions, children’s entertainers and multiple street theater locations. If you’re looking to satisfy your craving for some some great grub, there is also a delicious international menu of food and beverages available throughout the festival site.
This year, the festivities include a wide variety of performing artists, such as Musiq Soulchild, Gov’t Mule, Wale, Maysa, Rebelution, Jackie Greene and Cold War Kids.
As we mentioned before, if you’re not Fitzgerald resident, park in our garage all day for just $10. The Fitzgerald Garage is the closest and least expensive parking option. Once you get to Artscape, head over to the new Guest Services Tent for merchandise, advance tickets to free indoor performances, accessibility information and more. Festival-goers may reserve seats the day of the show for dance, opera and theater performances and pick up their tickets (limit 4 tickets/guest) at the Guest Services Tent. The air-conditioned tent is located in front of The Lyric on Mount Royal Avenue, right across the street from The Fitzgerald.
Can’t Miss Events:
- Dance at Artscape: Dance fans unite! Performances are free and open to the public. Don’t know about you, but we’re looking forward to DANCE ATTACKS. They begin Friday (7/16) and commence at 5pm on Sunday (7/18).
- Theater & Opera: Experience the performing arts as Theatre Project and the Brown Center offer everything from storytelling workshops to opera performances. Special children’s programs are also featured on Sunday (7/18) from 12pm-5pm at Theatre Project.
- Billie Holiday Tribute Concert: On Saturday (7/17), Baltimore salutes a true 20th century jazz legend with a concert that brings winners of the Billie Holiday Vocal Competition and Artscape attendees together. The concert starts at 4pm.
- Chick Webb Jazz Combo Competition, presented by MECU: This competition honors the legacy of Baltimore’s Chick Webb, whose powerful technique and virtuoso performances as a jazz drummer made him the premiere drummer of the swing era. Pay tribute to “the daddy of them all” with this fun free competition on Saturday (7/17) from 3pm-6pm, and don’t miss the winner announcement at 5:45pm.
Just to reiterate, the entire event is FREE! Artscape will undoubtedly draw crowds from across the country, so make sure to take advantage of this incredible event that’s happening right in our backyard. See you there, and don’t forget the SPF, because it’s going to be a hot one Baltimore!
