The Charm City Scene: July 12 – July 18

The Charm City Scene: A weekly guide to Baltimore from The Fitzgerald

The Charm City Scene (CCS) is back in action and ready to give you the scoop on the best in Baltimore. From an inspirational Brazilian soccer documentary, to the symphonic tribute to Michael Jackson, and finally the cultural extravaganza better known as Artscape, the middle of July has never looked so enticing.

There will be a special screening of Pelada this Tuesday at the Charles Theatre, a great independent local movie theatre that’s a quick walk from the Fitzgerald. Pelada is the Brazilian word for “naked,” and it’s also the term for a game of pickup soccer. The documentary, created by two college soccer players who didn’t make it to the professional level of Brazilian soccer, follows a stripped down version of the game played throughout the world. Not finished with their love for the game, they set off on an adventure, capturing the story of the people who play across the globe. If you’re a fan of the game, you should definitely check out this film.

On Thursday, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) will be paying tribute to the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Accompanied by “Jackson-esque” vocalist, the BSO will perform the songs that spanned his 40-year career. Whether you’re MJ’s biggest fan or just want hear the BSO perform some great pop songs, head on down to the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall this Thursday night.

The grand finale for this week’s CCS is quite incredible. As the largest free festival in America, Artscape is one of the best ways to really experience the local art scene and culture of Baltimore. Throughout the weekend, there will be countless art exhibits, concerts, theatrical performances, and fun activities. Best part? It’s outside The Fitzgerald’s front door! Music performances by the the Cold War Kids, Musiq Soulchild, and Rebelution won’t disappoint, and art exhibits at great local galleries (Metro Gallery, Pinkard Gallery, Hexagon Space, etc.) will certainly stimulate your senses. Don’t miss this incredible annual event, and if you don’t call The Fitzgerald home, come park in our garage all day for just $10.

Hope you enjoy this week’s scene in and around our neighborhood, and stay tuned for next week’s Charm City Scene!
